Term 4

Wow! What an exciting start to term 4 we have had!
On Monday we watched a special show called “Puss in boots, pet detective” by New Zealand Playhouse. The three actors were very talented, taking on lots of roles in the play. They sang some very funny songs.

Then on Tuesday we had Constable Gordon take us for a scooter safety lesson. We learned how to safely use the brake on our scooter as well as how to cross the road and travel along the footpath on our scooter. It is so important to look out for cars when scooting near a road.

Wow! What a fun assembly!
It was so much fun bringing the different book characters to life in front of the whole school.

Trip to MOTAT

To start our concept this term we visited MOTAT.
MOTAT is an incredible place full of exciting and interesting science and technology to explore. We had a lesson with an educator where we followed the scientific method to"bust that myth". We also had a ride on the tram!
Here's a video showing some of the things we explored.

Exploration

Our concept for Term 3 is Exploration.
During week one we visited the Science Roadshow where we watched two shows and explored lots and lots of interactive displays.
We also looked at the connections we could make between the science concepts by using hexagons and joining them together.
What a fun way to start a new term!

Year 3 Creative Environments

Year 3 have been looking at creative environments. We started out by exploring the creative spaces at Meadowbank School.
We were given the opportunity by Mr Aukett and Mr Ayson to design a creative marble run to improve an area at our school.
We spent three weeks going to one of the five different creativity classes. These were Science, Printing, Sculpture, Painting and Multimedia. We got to choose which one we went to.
After the creativity classes we got into groups of five with one person from each workshop to share our learning and design a creative marble run together.
When we finished them we invited our parents into see what we have been learning this term. Here’s a video of our learning in creativity.

Shape

Our Stand in Maths this term is Shape. This week we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes and their attributes. We have also been looking at different transformations. This is where a shape can slide, turn, or flip. We created tessellations showing how shapes can fit together without any gaps or overlaps. Here are some pictures of our creations!

Year 3 Art Workshops

Multimedia

A few weeks ago we had our first multimedia session. On the first session we painted our backgrounds, mine was purple. We used sponges, combs and the things that look like long toothpicks. When we painted we didn't paint the same way we painted different ways to make texture.

On the second session we made something out of newspaper, I made a cupcake. Before we made our amazing things of art we sketched out a quick drawing of what we were going to do in our topic books.

After we sketched our art we drew parts of it onto the newspaper then we cut it out and used PVA glue to stick it to our backgrounds.

First I drew a cupcake wrapper onto my newspaper then I cut it out and stuck it on to my background. I then drew the rest of my cupcake and stuck it on to my background.

Then I finished gluing on the rest of my cupcake.

On the next session of multimedia I used a page from a magazine to make my cupcake wrapper colourful. I put some pastel on it to make it pop. We added glitter to make it look amazing.

Life education

Today we had our first session with Harold the Giraffe and Lynne.
We looked at how we can identify how someone is feeling by looking at their facial expressions and body language. We also watched a video of Billy who was new to a school where people weren't friendly to him. We all gave great suggestions on how people should have treated him instead.

Narrative Writing

As part of the collaboration between Room 20 and 21 we have been learning to write narratives. Half of each class has been working in Room 20 with Mrs Wheeler to plan and write a narrative based on a picture. We have spent a lot of time developing the language and structure to create our story.

The Invisible Man

One dull morning there was a girl and an invisible man taking a walk through a poor town. The invisible man preferred living by himself because he doesn’t like talking to people except the little girl. His house is in the dark forest in the hope that nobody will ever find him. Even though he loved the little girl, he didn’t know how to be a good friend, so he carried her around in a suitcase. He gave her a little toy pig to show that he liked her.

As the sun was coming out, the streets were getting busier. People were rushing here and there to get to work. As they were walking they walked through the invisible man. He started to feel dizzy and upset but he was too shy to ask them to walk around him instead. Each time a person walked through him he started to wobble and the suitcase would get knocked around like a football being kicked. Suddenly, a tall man lost control of his skateboard and it knocked the suitcase to the ground. It bashed and crashed as it hit the ground. The stones underneath made a dent in the suitcase. The little girl fell out. The invisible man didn’t notice so he kept on walking down the street. The little girl stood up to look for him but because he was invisible it was impossible to see him.

“Help! Help!” screamed the little girl as she panicked that she was lost. The little girl thought that maybe he had left her on purpose because he didn’t like her and she worried that if she asked anyone to take her home she would make him cross. Just then the little girl remembered they had promised to meet at their special meeting place which was the town square. She ran as fast as the wind to the town square. Once she got there she still couldn’t see the invisible man so she went to sit on a park bench. Right next to her was the invisible man’s hat and the dented suitcase. She knew he was nearby! She sighed with relief as he appeared next to her. “Hello, I am sorry I lost you. I didn’t realise you had fallen out. I will never do that again.”
“It’s okay, I am glad that I found you.” she replied.

The invisible man decided it wasn’t a good idea to carry her in a suitcase so they walked together holding hands through the park on the way home.

Creative Environments Hunt

Our focus this term in concept is "Creative Environments". This week we went for a scavenger hunt around our school to see if we could find any areas that showed creativity. We found lots of exciting and engaging spaces! We thought the Lorax Garden, the sculptures in the gully, and the use of paint to brighten walls and the concrete were super creative. Later this term we will be thinking of our own way to make a more creative environment in our school.

Buddy Time!

On Monday Room 20 had super special visitors! Our buddy class, Room 9, came to visit us.
We listened to them read their stories and read them some of our own. We also talked to them the cool things we have been learning this year and showed them our art on the walls. It is so much fun being an older buddy and getting to make new friends.

Swimming stories

We have just finished two fun filled weeks of swimming lessons. Our writing focus for the last few weeks has been on recount writing.
Have a look at a few of these stories and see if you can identify all of the key elements of a recount - an orientation, the main events sequenced with time connectives and a conclusion.

The awesome pool
Every day at school we go to the pools to learn how to swim.
It is so fun, especially going to the bottom of the shallow pool to get the rings.
The first thing that we did was kicking with the board. Next we do the same thing but with a noodle.
The toilets are really wet on the ground. I wish it wasn't wet on the ground because it looks disgusting.
I was freezing when I got out of the pool but it was fun.

Swimming
On Tuesday morning Room 20 went to do some swimming in the swimming pool.
First we walked to the swimming pool and I went into the ladies bathroom. The ladies bathroom was dirty and icky. I took off my shirt and skort. I took my goggles out of my bag and my towel. I hung my town on the silver hook. Then we hopped into the pool. It was as freezing as if I was in the arctic.
First I got a board from Benny. Then Enzo went first and he only kicked his legs. After that Ben took the board off us and he said "Show me your torpedo arms." We all put our arms behind our ears and we kicked to Ben and back. Then we got a board again and we did 4 arm circles and a bubble breathe.
After that we played the caterpillar race. It's like you line up behind someone and you put your arms on each other's shoulders and run. Who ever wins gets to hop out first.
I had a nice time at the pool.
